Jacob Leadley's labour of love shows impressively complex layers of autolysis and a rich underbelly derived from a small proportion of wines fermented in barrel. Classic toasted brioche, with good fruit and honeyed apple blossom notes.
Black Chalk is the creation of award-winning winemaker Jacob Leadley and family, with the inaugural 2015 vintage released as recently as April 2018. Grapes are grown entirely in on the chalk Down vineyards of Hampshire. There's the traditional trio of grapes found in Champagne but an unusually high proportion of Pinot Meunier, a red grape Jacob believes is particularly suited to Hampshire. Fermentation partly in barrel, then the traditional secondary fermentation in bottle, where the wine aged for two years on lees before disgorgement.
