In the 2003 Cru Bourgeois classification, Chateau Phelan Segur it was listed as one of only 9 Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnels. The 70 hectare vineyard of Estate is planted to 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 39% Merlot, 1.5% Cabernet Franc and 1.5% Petit Verdot. The vineyard has a terroir of gravel, sand and clay based soils. The vines are primarily in three locations. 8 hectares of vines are planted close to the chateau.
