Whoa...! I used language very unbecoming of a Wine Merchant when I tasted this. A wine that cannot stop picking up awards: Golds at these 2019 shows - The Royal Melbourne Wine Awards, The Royal Adelaide Wine Show, and the James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge.
AppNatTasting Note: Rich, ripe notes of tropical and stone fruits at the front of the mouth. Super salinity and balance in the middle, and a rush of white peach and grapefruit zippiness at the end. Concentration and length are fantastic. All wrapped in the most sympathetically integrated oak. This is a spectacular wine!
Winemakers Tasting Note: Lovely lifted fruit from a classic Margaret River vintage together with some delicate savoury notes from solids and wild ferment. Grapefruit, white peach and dried pear give way to barrel ferment and match stick complexities. Fine fruit flavours, wild ferment and subtle sulphides contribute a delicious savoury oyster shell or saline character to the palate, giving the wine greater complexity and overall purity.
Fruit for the Flametree SRS Chardonnay is sourced from a single site, located in the southern part of the Wallcliffe sub-region, south of the Margaret River town site. The fruit from this vineyard comes from old, low yielding Gin Gin vines.
Flametree Wines is located on the picturesque shores of Geographe Bay, at the gateway to one of the world's great wine producing regions – the Margaret River Wine Region in Western Australia. Established in 2007 by the Towner family, Flametree Wines is a proud team, committed to producing consistent, distinctive Margaret River wines while building on long term, loyal brand advocates through memorable wine experiences.
By winning Australia's most well-known and respected wine accolade, the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy, with their first ever red wine, Flametree Wines firmly established themselves in the upper echelon of Margaret River wine producers. Proving that this accolade was not a coincidence and that Flametree was actually deserving of the prestigious award, the next vintage was also a finalist in the following years' show. This unprecedented success has since continued, with many critic reviews and awards.
The seriousness of their intent to establish a world-class winery from the outset was highlighted by the appointment of Cliff Royle as Winemaker and General Manager of the Estate. Cliff has been making world class wines in the Margaret River region for many years and comes to Flametree Wines after twelve years as Chief Winemaker at Voyager Estate. Amongst a number of impressive accolades, Cliff was awarded Winemaker of the Year by Winestate Magazine in 2003, was a finalist in the Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year in 2005 and has been a senior judge at the Royal Melbourne and Perth Wine Shows over a number of years. Langton's Master of Wine, Andrew Caillard, said "Winemaker Cliff Royle is regarded by critics as one of the most gifted winemakers of his generation."
Cliff comments "I think Margaret River is without doubt the number one premium wine region in the country and consistently produces benchmark wines made from the classic grape varieties of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The aim at Flametree Wines is to make a range of wines that play to the strengths of the region and consistently deliver a great drinking experience at any price point. Margaret River wines should exhibit the hallmark characters of structure, perfume and elegance that has made this region famous."
