Lovely lemon curd and vanilla on the nose. Super tension and freshness highlight the concentrated citrus flavours, a little ripe apricot, superbly integrated oak and light spice. Elegantly poised with a cleansing minerality offsetting the rich texture.
Matured for 11 months in a combination of small and large oak barrels, 27% of them new. Then racked into stainless steel for a further 5 months. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with just the tiniest amount of SO2.
Founded by Cape Wine Master, Dave Johnson and his wife, Felicity (née Newton), Newton Johnson Family Vineyards has been solidly building its reputation over the past 25 years. Since their first vintage in 1997, made from bought fruit, they are now producing some of the Cape’s finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from their own 15 hectares of vines.
The Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is a cool climate region in close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, the surrounding mountains funnelling sea breezes and frequent mists through the vineyards. Vines sit on well-draining gravelly soils of granite origin, with clay deposits on the lower reaches. Combined with different aspects, the family’s three vineyard sites yield a range of flavour profiles in the grapes – resulting in characterful and complex wines.
