An intense ruby red colour, this wine is bold and weighty with concentrated aromas of black cherry, prune, spice and vanilla. Soft, rounded and full of ripe fruit, with notes of cocoa, coffee and vanilla.
Located in the southern heel of Italy and sandwiched between the Ionian and Adriatic seas, Cantine San Marzano was established in 1962 when 19 vine growers decided to come together to create a winery that would allow them to showcase their collective efforts. Through the decades, the cantine has grown significantly and today grapes are sourced from over 1200 growers (some of whom have just the tiniest number of vines but who all play their part). San Marzano is reputed for its elegant wines, made from Puglia’s distinctive varietals and which reflect both the region’s unique terroir and the passion of the people who farm it.
Grapes for the magnificent Anniversario 62 wine are sourced from some of the oldest - and finest - vineyards in and around San Marzano and Sava, where the low bush vines are planted at a high density. The vineyards here are famous for their red soils whose colour comes from the presence of the mineral, iron oxide. These unique soils are well-suited to the primitivo vines which yield fabulous fruit here. Puglian vineyards bask in plenty of Mediterranean sunshine with cool reprieve coming thanks to the sea breezes that arrive from the nearby Adriatic and Ionian seas.
The primitivo grapes in this wine are all sourced from an area known as ‘Primitivo di Manduria’ which is seen to be the very finest spot for primitivo. Only the very best grapes make it in to the unique and special, Anniversario 62 and harvest is done by hand to ensure the most rigorous of quality control. Once in the winery, 80% of the grapes are macerated for 18 days, with the remainder getting a further seven days to bring additional breadth and complexity to the wine. A year and a half of oak ageing in French and American oak barrels follows and the result is an absolute superstar.
