From VM's flagship vineyard, Taylors Pass, this is wine that will happily go toe-to-toe with the very best from Marlborough. A concentrated, zingy and herbaceous drop of sunshine with a beautiful streak of gunflint. Bravo!
The picturesque Taylors Pass Vineyard is located on the northern bank of the Awatere River in southern Marlborough. The average vine age is between 13-18 years-old. Sheltered from prevailing cool easterly winds, each terrace of the vineyard has varying soil types; stony gravels are nearest the river, whereas the mid-terrace has silt over gravels and the highest terrace is deeper silt over clay-papa base. This patchwork of soil types provides the vineyard with dramatically variable ripening patterns, therefore producing a "fruit salad" of Sauvignon Blanc flavours to select from. Restraint and refinement are the outstanding hallmarks of this excellent Single Vineyard expression.
Founded in 1961 by Sir George Fistonich, Villa Maria remains 100% family owned and has claimed the title of New Zealand’s Most Awarded Winery for forty consecutive years.
